October 9, 2022 -- Psalm 119:112 & Hebrews 3:12-13 -- A heart inclined to the LORD

I incline my heart to perform your statutes
forever, to the end.
Psalm 119:112 ESV

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today”, that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Hebrews 3:12-13 ESV

There are two readings today, the first is a vow dedicating oneself to the LORD and the second is a strong warning. You may know Psalm 119 is 176 verses long and it celebrates the Law of God. Through-out the psalm writer declares himself bound to the Law, submitted to the Living God through his obedience to the decrees and statutes of the LORD. In verse 112 he vows he will constantly incline his heart, willingly submitting his heart to do what the commandments of the LORD require. He will continually guard his heart and his attitude so that he will not falter in this obedience.

The passage from Hebrews is part of a longer warning. The writer of Hebrews recognizes how easy it is for the heart of a believer to become hard and a place where evil will take up residence. The stark evidence of how easy it is to harden one's heart is drawn from the Book of Exodus. Therein the people of God, who after experiencing God’s deliverance from Egypt, His mercies in giving mana and water and meat, hardened their hearts against Him. An entire generation died in the wilderness and that generation was not allowed to enter the Promised Land. That is a severe warning indeed.

It is Sunday. Get to a Bible-believing and preaching church. Get connected with other believers and talk about the things of God. Keep your heart tender towards the LORD of Glory. Do not let evil thoughts or desires choke out your love for Jesus Christ. In Him your sins have been conquered and the punishment against them has been poured out. Later in this same chapter of Hebrews it is noted that the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword. Reading the Word of God helps you to identify sin and by the power of the Spirit to cut it out.

Faithful Father, You are worthy of all praise and honour. Believers whose lives have been redeemed from the grave incline their hearts to You in grateful devotion. This Sunday, by the power of Your Spirit, renew in Your people a depth of worship and more dedicated obedience. King Jesus, rule the hearts and lives of Your people so that evil cannot gain a foothold. Jesus, Captain of Salvation, give such a vision to Your people that their eyes and imagination are filled with the prospect of Your glory that will lead believers to the Everlasting City where God the Triune lives with His people. Bless Your preachers and evangelists, missionaries and Bible teachers so that the Word will go out with power this day. Amen.

October 8, 2022 -- Psalm 119:73 -- Why are You valuable? Hint: look at the Maker's mark

Your hands have made and fashioned me;
   give me understanding that I may learn Your commandments.
Psalm 119:73 ESV

The Bible makes it clear that the artist who creates has the right over his work. One common image in the Bible is that of a potter. A potter can take one vessel and give it a place of prominence and smash another one that he has made. This is pertinent because God alone is the Master and Sole Creator of Life. The One Who made us is the One Who has the right over every aspect of our lives.

If a believer does not understand that foundational point, he is made by God, then he will fight all the commandments of the LORD His God. Once a believer bows his heart and his head in humility before the LORD his Maker, then the commandments of God are life and joy and blessing and the believer longs to know how the LORD of glory would direct his life.

Whenever you watch shows where people go antiquing, you’ll see someone whisper with awe; “Oh, this is a beautiful example of a piece by the furniture maker.” The appraiser will then give background on the skills and gifts of that particular furniture maker, and all that explanation about the maker highlights the value of piece being considered, because of the reputation of the maker enhances the value of what is being considered. You see the parallel, right? Christians have value precisely because God has fashioned each one. The reputation of the Maker means each person who ever lives contributes to the great and glorious reputation of the LORD their Maker, Who is great and glorious in all His works.

Father in heaven, the psalmist declared: “I have seen a limit to all perfection, but Your commands are boundless”. How true it is. Your commands are boundless in their perfections. They give evidence of Your steadfast love that comforts all who trust in You. Father in heaven, increase Your children’s confidence in Your good purposes by the powerful presence of Your Spirit. May the Spirit’s renovating work in the hearts of believers give a clearer view of Who Jesus Is. The more Jesus fills the vision of believers may Your people more completely and more faithfully serve You, LORD of Righteousness. May those who see Your children living and working in faithfulness to You, see and rejoice and as a result themselves learn to hope in Your Word. Amen

October 7, 2022 -- Psalm 119:72 -- What is worth more than gold and silver? Find out!

The Law of Your mouth is better to me,
   than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
Psalm 119:72 ESV

The Law of God teaches me I am a sinner. The Law of God shows me Jesus Christ is my Savior and Captain of Salvation. The Law of God guides me in thankful living. When I wonder, how can I thank Him for all His blessings to me? It is the Law of God that is right there, like lights illuminating the pathway of life in the darkness of this world’s wickedness. Exodus 20:1-17 the 10 Commandments and Jesus’ summary: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbour as yourself. These are the vital truths which direct our feet in riches that are better than gold

The Law of God is better than gold and silver because thieves can steal money. The stock market can crash. Money is deceptive and the love of money is a root of evil. Gold and silver pieces cannot help me in the grave. Only the Law of the LORD’s mouth, the Law which points out sin, directs the believer to the Savior and guides one in thankful living—that Law is the precious gift which carries us through all of life and which is our joy and song in eternity. God is better. God is all my Hope and all my Joy!

O LORD,
No day of my life has passed that has not
   proved guilty in thy sight.
   Prayers have been uttered from a prayerless heart.
   Praise has been often praiseless sound;

Blessed Jesus, let me find a cover in thy appeasing wounds.

October 5, 2022 -- Matthew 13:36-43 -- Wheat and weeds sown into the world

Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” 37 He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. Jesus sows good seed. His followers are sons and daughters of the Father in heaven. They bear good fruit. Their lives are dedicated to the Father. That is true fruitfulness, to obey the Father, living lives of thankful obedience to Him for the greatness of His salvation poured out into their lives. Included in this parable is a terrifying image, that the devil sows sons and daughters into this world whose purpose is to choke out the children of God, to oppose them and seek to overrule them. Consider the implications of this parable.

• This is why a Christian cannot marry a non-Christian—one serves the Father in heaven and the other, no matter how disarmingly charming, is working the devil’s purposes of destroying the works of God.

• This is why the Christian has, as his closest advisors Christian friends only, no others need apply. Non-Christian friends may be friends, but all their counsel is from the depths of hell and is Devil-designed to throw as many as possible into the lake of fire. So a Christian takes counsel from the Word of God, from the direction of the Holy Spirit and from Christian friends whose walk with God is bearing fruit.

• This is why the Christian studies the word of God—so help him discern what is wheat and good and true from what are weeds. Weeds, at first, may appear like the wheat, at an early stage seeming so innocuous or so like a Christian might be, but they are children of the Devil and can only bring choking destruction.

Take courage, believer, Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33). The Father in heaven and Jesus, Who is seated at the Father’s right have, have poured out the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge so that the believer will be able to distinguish what is good and true and holy. This is why it is so sweet to trust in Jesus and to take Him at His Word

Father in heaven, there is such a perverse rebellion in my heart, something that inclines me to argue with Your Word and Your wisdom. Yet, Your Word is tested and true. It is completely reliable and reveals Your faithfulness to Your sons and daughters. Thank You for Your steadfast patience and love toward all Your people. By the powerful presence of Your Spirit, help me in this day to give to You all my obedience. You have already given fullness of life in Jesus Christ. You have already put Your Spirit in my heart so that the battle's outcome is already assured: Jesus has already overcome the world, He has already disarmed the Devil. Blessed are You, Triune God, and beautiful and perfect in all Your ways. Amen.

October 4, 2022 -- Matthew 22:36-40 -- Minor Course Correction with Major Results

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he [Jesus] said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Close enough! How often isn’t that the response of the heart of a weary believer. Or lazy believer? Or a believer who loves the benefits of God but is weighing the cost. God rightfully demands all your heart and all your mind, and all your soul be entirely dedicated to Him, but, really, you sigh, good enough should be good enough. Consider the following illustration.

One Degree Difference: Imagine an airplane leaving from Los Angeles flying direct to Rome, Italy. The flight will take about 12 hours if the plane goes in a direct and straight line. But, if the nose of the airplane is pointed just 1 degree off course to the south, after 12 hours the plane will land somewhere in Tunisia, Africa!

If just one degree makes that much difference in a 12-hour flight, how much of a massive difference will the little compromises and seemingly unimportant little areas of fudging rather than giving Him all your obedience? No wonder Christians wake up sometimes and think: “How’d I get here?!”

Today, reset your course. The LORD is faithful! The Father and the Son have poured out the Spirit so that you will have the power and comfort necessary to confess your failures and to renew your obedience. Obedience which is joy-filled because it is based on God's already-given rich salvation.

Lord, I praise You as the all-powerful, all-knowing, every-where present God of the universe. What really touches me is that You control all things for my good! You made me for Yourself, and it moves me to think You would choose me for a committed love relationship. You have proven Your faithfulness to me so many times and in so many ways. Why would I ever seek another god who would be so grossly inadequate in comparison to You?

God is constantly and continually speaking. The miracles of Jesus pointed out the veracity of the Old Testament. Jesus’ presence revealed the love of the Father made incarnate, that is, made flesh. But the Israelites wanted signs and more miracles—they were fascinated, but not sorrowful for their sins nor where they ready to leave sin and turn to Him. Sounds familiar. Today God speaks to His people by the Word. There is no more need for miraculous signs that the Kingdom of God is near. How many people chase after signs and wonders while ignoring the hands of Jesus stretched out to them in love which every page of Scripture would show them.

What a mighty warning that is for Christians today. God’s word is perfectly clear. Do not do as many Christians around you are doing--demanding extra signs and miracles. The work of Jesus Christ is recorded in Scripture. All that is needed for salvation is contained in the Bible. His mighty works are powerfully displayed in His word. Are you responding to the goodness of God in repentance for your sin? Are you reading the Bible aware that Jesus is feeding your soul?

          The words of Scripture thrill my soul as nothing else ever can. They
          bear me aloft or dash me down. They tear me in pieces or build me
          up. The words of God have more power over me than ever David’s
          fingers had over his harp strings. Is it not so with you?

Father in heaven, Good and True are all Your ways. Thank You for the gift of Jesus Christ, the "Yes" and "Amen" to Your steadfast love. Father in heaven, pour out Your Spirit on Your people so that the Word will accomplish the purpose for which You sent it out. Feed the souls of Your people. Reveal sin. Give hope to those who are contrite. Renew zeal. Increase hope. Incite a holy anticipation for eternity in Your presence. In all this, may Jesus Christ, so perfectly revealed in the Word, thrill of the soul of Your people and Christ be the joy of holy hearts. Amen.

October 1, 2022 -- Isaiah 66:1-2 -- Do you tremble before Him Who is Splendid?

God of Glory Whose presence fills all of creation, by Your Spirit's presence in me, teach me to honour You and praise You as I should do. As Your Spirit directs me to the word, may I see Jesus clearly and in view of Who He Is--the radiance of Your glory and Your True and Perfect Word--let me tremble before Him. Trembling with awe. Trembling with thankfulness. Trembling at the thought of offending Your great majesty. Thank You, oh thank you, that Your attention if fixed on the one who is humble, who is remorseful, and who trembles at Your word. Your kindness and never-ending love is beyond description. September 30, 2022 -- Ecclesiastes 4:1 -- Compassion and the Captain of Salvation

Again I saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun. And behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no one to comfort them! On the side of their oppressors there was power, and there was no one to comfort them.
Ecclesiastes 4:1 ESV

When He [Jesus] saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 9:36 ESV

Jesus is fully human. One emotion He frequently expressed is compassion. As you read the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) make a note of how often it is recorded that Jesus has compassion on the people or was moved to pity and such expressions. It will really emphasis for you His humanity.

Today's first reading is from Ecclesiastes. It states what many of us see in the world around us: so many people are without any comfort. It seems that countless numbers of people are bobbing like corks in the ocean bobbing up and down under oppression and helplessness. This is the work of darkness and sin. The second reading, from Matthew, shows the great hope offered in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the High Prist—Who offered Himself as the sacrifice for sin. He is the perfect priest; in His humanity He continually has compassion on His people. He will never have compassion fatigue. He brings the wrongs and the wretchedness of the world to the attention of the Father.

Jesus is the King. He is willing to help and able to help. This is a role He combines with His work as the Praying High Priest. He continually prays for and works on behalf of all those who are helpless and comfortless. His Kingdom is secure. His throne endures forever. His people are those who are truly happy for they know His deliverance.

Jesus is the Prophet. He calls out to the world. Soften your hearts. Break down the stubborn resistance you have against helping others. Let your compassion flow freely and help those who are weary and wounded and weak. Do this, from the storehouse of salvation given to you by the Father, Who has given you the power to do such things by the presence of His Spirit within you.

If you wonder "why isn't Jesus doing anything?" He has. He Is. And now He sends you, as His representatives--where you see injustice, speak and act. Where there are hurting people, helpless and hopeless--bring the Gospel. Live prophetically, calling out for the attention of all those around you--Jesus is the Great Prophet, Prist and King. Look to Him.

Thank You, Father in heaven, for Jesus Christ--the Son of God and Son of Man. Thank You for His humanity and great compassion. Thank You, that in Christ Jesus we see the radiance of Your glory and Your perfect compassion. Help us, Father, by Your Spirit, to be ambassadors of Jesus Christ--following Him Who is the Captain of Salvation. Amen.

September 29, 2022 -- Matthew 7:21-23 -- Whole-hearted obedience

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Matthew 7:21-23 ESV

These are perhaps some of the most difficult words Jesus speaks. Jesus did not dispute that they did mighty works in His Name, nor does he argue that they prophesied and cast out demons. He goes right to the heart of the matter: “I never knew you.” That is what staggers me. He then commands them to leave Him. They have no place in His presence in eternity. Their words, their works, and their heart all gave evidence of their lawlessness.

Is your heart submitted to King Jesus? Is it your desire to know Him and to walk with Him and to share this knowledge with anyone and everyone? Those who say “Lord, Lord’ are the ones who quietly do what He requires. The parable that follows this teaching is about a man who builds his house on the rock and the other who builds on sand. The one who built on the rock listened to the voice of the wise. The one who build his house on the sand defied all wisdom and advice and still built. Both of the houses looked good. Both of the houses are well furnished. The man who built on the rock is the man who was submitted to God and did what was good—only his house will weather the storm and the judgment.

Are you lawless in your ways. Do you think you know what God requires but you have no interest in the Bible, no commitment to prayer? Can you take instruction and correction? There are enough people who are declaring this and that to others doing so with no reference to what the Living God demands of you. Let Jesus’ words be a profound warning to you today. Go to the Bible. Read it. Treasure it. Obey what you read, doing so in the power of the Spirit so that your life shines the Light of Jesus Christ to the glory of the Father.

Our prayer today is Psalm 91. Notice the humble dedication to the way of the Living God which directs the heart of the original writer of this Psalm. Look at the promises of God at the end of the Psalm which are for those who keep His ways and commands,  

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
8 You will only look with your eyes
    and see the recompense of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my refuge—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    no plague come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;

September 28, 2022 -- Matthew 5:14-16 -- Why do good deeds?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 ESV

It is a phrase I have been hearing over and over recently: “You are not saved by your good works, but you are saved for good works.” It is a clever phrase that is very helpful. It is the work of Jesus Christ that saves us. He was brought out to the hill outside of Jerusalem and crucified. True Light that gives light to every man endured great suffering and darkness that He might be for us the sacrifice Who takes away our sin. We don’t have to do things to makes ourselves right with God, Jesus has done it all. Now, as those who have been made right with God, it is a pleasure and a joy to live for Him. We willingly endure mocking and scorn, ridicule and whatever else might happen to us because we know our life has been anchored to Jesus Christ. We are kept in Him by the power of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us. The Holy Spirit is the power of God in us so that we can shine brightly for Jesus in all we say and do.

So, I don’t do good works in order to be seen and applauded by others. However, the good I do will be seen by others and I want to recognize Jesus Christ, making it clear He is the Author and Perfecter of anything good that flows from my life. I do this so that He receives the credit and glory. And this will have the result both for believers and for those who are being drawn to Jesus by the Spirit. They see and marvel, looking up to God the Father, they will declare: You are Good. Right and true all Your ways. Thus, the Father receives the glory.

It may be others see your good works and hate you. Rather than despair or question God because of this, be assured this too results in the praise and greater glory of the Father in heaven. Here is how to achieve this. Remember that once you too were revilers, those who questioned God the Glorious and rejected His people. When you experience now what you once measured out against others, you will stop and bless God all the more declaring, “Your grace is so amazing, saving a wretch a like me!” The Light of Jesus Christ will shine through you in all and every circumstance, this generated in you by the power of the Holy Spirit.

O GOD, WHOSE WILL CONQUERS ALL,
There is no comfort in anything apart from enjoying YOu 
and being engaged in Your service;
You are All in all, and all enjoyments are what
to me You make them, and no more.
I am well pleased with Your will, whatever it is,or should be in all respects,
And if You propose me decide for myself in any matter,
I would choose to refer all to You,
for You are infinitely wise and cannot do inappropriate,
as I am in danger of doing.
I rejoice to think that all things are at Your disposal,
and it delights me to leave them there.
Then prayer turns wholly into praise,
and all I can do is to adore and bless You.
What shall I give You for all Your benefits?
I am torn between two thoughts,
knowing not what to do; I long to make some return, but have nothing to offer,
and can only rejoice that You do all,
that none in heaven or on earth shares Your honour;
I can of myself do nothing to glorify Your blessed Name,
but I can through grace cheerfully surrender soul and body to You,
I know that You are the Author and Finisher of faith,
that the whole work of redemption is Yours alone,
that every good work or thought found in me
is the effect of You power and grace,
that Your sole motive in working in me to will and to do
is for You good pleasure.
O God, it is amazing that men can talk so much
about man’s creaturely power and goodness,
when, if You did not restrain us every moment,
we should be devils incarnate.
This, by bitter experience, thou hast taught me
concerning myself.

September 27, 2022 -- Ephesians 3:14-19 -- Contemplation to accompany your morning coffee

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

This is probably a very familiar section of Ephesians, one you have read and pondered before. In preparation for teaching this text in today’s Bible Study I read Sinclair Ferguson’s “Let’s Study Ephesians”. It was so helpful. My usual focus is on the fact that we need the strength of the Spirit, in our inner being, so that we can have Christ live in our hearts through faith. It is both beautiful to think about and marvelous to meditate on that He Who fills the heaven of heavens could make our hearts His home. Awesome.

Today I was challenged by the paradox at the end of the reading. We need strength in our inner being so that we will know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. Yeah, read that last sentence again, I’ll wait! (You might want to read it one more time, it is very rich!) Jesus is fully God and fully Man. He is in His divinity perfect and infinite, and our language almost breaks down trying to describe Him and HIs holiness. Yet, the Father has decided to give us, His children, the gift of Christ and of His Spirit, living in our hearts, so that we will know His love. Such love is so vast and great and perfect and strong and steadfast that the more we know of it, the more we realize there is to know, and we realize how little we actually understand even as we long for more. Just thinking on this leads us to worship God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Father from Whom every family in heaven and earth is named, great are You and worthy of praise. You have blessed Your people in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Jesus Christ—sealing to our hearts Him Who is the most extravagant gift and doing this by Your Spirit. Fill our thoughts and imaginings with the constant contemplations of Jesus so that we will truly be filled with the fullness of Him Who surpasses knowledge. Father, Source of every good gift, lead us by Your Spirit so that the Bible is precious to us and as we read it Jesus is our highest desire and joy. Amen.

September 26, 2022 -- Revelation 20:11-15 -- The Day of Judgment

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

What a powerful and sobering passage! A few days ago, I was listening to a podcast, Steve Lawson preached on this passage. He explained verse 13, and his explanation was so helpful. Here was the issue I had. Why does God wait with judging the dead who are to be cast into hell? Lawson noted that Death and Hades hold the enemies of God until the Day of Judgment and at that terrible day the full extent of their deeds will be made known. You see, sin affects more than just the man who commits it. Sin may ripple through a generation or two. When the Sovereign LORD declares the end of history and Jesus returns to Judge the Living and the Dead, then the full effects of one’s wickedness will be traced through his life and the tentacles of evil will be revealed wherever it is they reached. That too will be judged, and the wicked man held to account.

Look at the passage, verse 15, there at the Judgment is the Lamb’s Book of Life. The names of the saints are written therein and the same have been sealed for salvation by the work of the Holy Spirit. Oh sinner, confess your sins. Ah, Christian, you too, as you recall your evil deeds and waywardness, repent and confess. Trust in the full mercy of the LORD. Deny yourself and follow Jesus Christ. I wonder, by way of contrast, do the deeds of the godly, those directed by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, have an impact for good that flows from one generation to the next? Will we rise up and praise the Lamb of God at the Throne, blessing the Father and adoring the Spirit for the ways in which the Triune God directed our lives to have an influence for His glory while we lived and even to a generation or two beyond?! What an exciting thought.

Father in heaven, Yours is the Kingdom and the power and glory now and always. Blessed Jesus, thank You for your great work of salvation which lifts sinners from death to life. Spirit of the Living God thank You for Your mighty presence in the life of every believer. Father of Love, so direct us by Your Spirit that the Word will be for us living and precious, and our life’s goal will be to live for the glory of the Triune God and to enjoy You forever. Amen

September 25, 2022 -- Psalm 1:2 and 2:1 -- What consumes your thinking?

…his delight is in the law of the LORD,
      and on His Law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:2 ESV

Why do the nations rage
   and the peoples plot in vain?
Psalm 2:1 ESV

The word “meditates” and the word “plot” are, in the original Hebrew language, the same verb. The man who loves the LORD meditates on His Law. He plots more and more ways to show his love and adoration for the LORD. The wicked man spends his time thinking of more and more ways to rebel against the LORD. Such a man may not even be aware of how wicked the many thoughts of his heart are. He may think himself neutral towards God in heaven, while he merely pursues his own ways and goals and wishes. He may be living his life with no reference to God at all. All such living is rebellion.

The Christian, for we are New Testament Christians who read these verses, is singularly devoted to the Son of God. The one who is blessed by the LORD is the One Whose thoughts are fixed on this: how will my actions honour God? Questions that guide his thinking will flow along the lines of: How will these words honour God? Will this action or refraining from dong that thing bring greater honour to my King? Do the people around me, at work, at school, in my neighbourhood, know that I am a Christian? 

Christians are renewed in their zeal for serving God when they gather for worship with other Christians.

Christians are deepened in their meditating on the Law of God as they memorize His Word.

Christians meditate on the Law of God and His goodness as they teach others His way.

What fills your thoughts? Are you thinking about the latest season of your fav program, or the latest installment of your video games more than you reflect on the things of God? You be saving and preparing for your retirement with great focus, but do you with even greater commitment and enthusiasm, prepare for eternity in the presence of the Son of Glory Who will usher you into the Presence of the Father and this by the power of the Spirit?

Thank You, Father in heaven, for the gift of Sunday—this beautiful sanctuary in time where Your people can gather and delight in You. Father, Giver of every good gift, by Your Spirit renew in us a greater zeal for meditating on Your Word. Spirit of the Living God, lead us to Jesus Christ in our Bible readings, in our prayer times, and help us to walk with Him in all our daily tasks. May we live profoundly aware of the fact that no part of day or night from sacredness is free, but all our lives in every step, is to be spent in fellowship with You. Amen

September 22, 2022 -- Psalm 2:11-12 -- True Power

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Serve the LORD with fear,
   and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
   lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
   for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Psalm 2:11-12 ESV

In half an hour or so I’ll be preaching from this Psalm. My congregation will be a room-full of ministers and elders and leaders in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Canada. The passage is a clarion call—a clear sounding alarm—warning world leaders and church leaders, people of whatever station in life to consider their ways and submit to the LORD and to His Christ—the Anointed One.

If the warning is heeded, then those who repent are to break with all the idolatry of their lives and give their honour and their worship to the Father in heaven through their obedience to Jesus Christ. The trembling comes in at the mercy of God, extended despite our great sins. The fear of the LORD is the view of His greatness, and His patience with us—extended until we have finally turned from sin. Old sins and terrible patterns are always pulling on Christians to return to former slave ways. We tremble at the thought of such foolishness.

Those rebellious who do not kiss the Son—that is, confess their sin and turn from wickedness—will experience His wrath. All it takes is a word from Him and nations will be humbled and every rebellion quelled! What a mighty God He is.

What fascinates me is the final line. When anyone leaves his sin and turns to Jesus, He welcomes that person. There is no cursing. No requirement of a ‘time out’ while the King enthroned in heaven makes you sweat, as if to get one to prove his sincerity. No. When someone runs to Jesus, Jesus receives Him, gives Him refuge and safety. What a glorious High King!

King Jesus--Truly You are the Blessed One--the Refuge of all who turn to You. High King of Heaven, thank You for Your salvific work which brings us to our Father as beloved sons and daughters. Spirit of the Living God, work in the hearts and lives of all those around us who do not yet believe, may their hearts too be conquered for King Jesus. Amen.

September 21, 2022 -- Colossians 4:2 -- Called to prayer

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

“Instinctively and automatically it [your old sin nature] will mobilize all the reasons it can conceive of for not praying now: You’re too busy; your mind is too preoccupied; your heart is not inclined to prayer” Owen Hallesby “Prayer”

It is interesting, isn’t it, how much time we make for the things we love? We call ourselves too busy, but the pile of things to do is left idling while we are binge-watching that movie series. There is always time for the things you love. I urge you pray to Jesus until He is for you exactly as He is pictured in Scripture: The Beloved One; the Desire of All Nations; the Anointed One set up by the LORD on Mt. Zion to rule your heart. When Jesus Christ captures your heart, fills your imagination as what He truly is, the King of Glory Who reveals the Father, then your prayer life, so illuminated by the Spirit, will be deeper and more vital. It won’t be a litany of things you want; it will be privilege to spend time with Him in conversation, praise, adoration, thanksgiving and asking.

God of my salvation, Heavenly Father,
Blessed Son, eternal Spirit,
I adore thee as one Being, one Essence,
one God in three distinct Persons,
for bringing sinners to thy knowledge and to thy kingdom.

September 19, 2022 -- II Peter 3:17-18 -- Living as Light in a sin-darkened world

You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
II Peter 3:17-18 ESV

How many personal questions do you get asked in a day? A dear friend might have the right to ask you questions, but strangers in our world ask weird things. Questions about political affiliations—and if your answer is not deemed acceptable the one asking you may well offer you a volley of his own unwelcome viewpoints. So much of our world’s discussion centres around sexuality and various expressions of it. Again, near strangers, such as bank tellers, might ask you to support their institution’s efforts at promoting one or another worldly cause. We live in a world of lawless people.

How can we grow in the grace of Jesus? The most basic and important answer: to know Jesus by His Word and through the worship of His great Name with fellow believers. Set apart time to pray. Here are a few suggestions that go beyond these foundational things.

When asked such personal and odd questions by near strangers, tell them of your devotion to Jesus Christ. Explain how His Spirit opens the wisdom of the Bible to you so that you know how to respond to the vagaries of the world, and, in fact, you are charting a path of purpose as you march towards an eternity in His presence. Sharing what you believe consolidates your faith and might open a doorway to others learning of His glory and grace.

Counter the questions of this world with your own, relevant questions. For example, today is Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. All of us face death: what do you think will happen to you when you die? What do you think is “out there” beyond this life? Listen respectfully. Then share your faith in Jesus Christ.

Dear Father in heaven as Your Word promises, let Your grace and peace be multiplied to Your people in the knowledge of God and Jesus—and this by the power of Your Spirt at work in us. Direct us by your Word and Spirit so that having escaped the corruption of the world we may be ever-more fruitful in the way of salvation. Mighty Father, in the strength of Your Spirit may we be bold witnesses for the work and glory of Jesus Christ. Amen.

September 18, 2022 -- Matthew 16:2-3 -- Reading the Signs of the Times

He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

Beloved in the LORD our Father, for the last couple of days my newsfeed keeps showing stories of the dire winter predictions of the Farmer’s Almanac. Winter snowfalls will be heavy in Atlantic Canada. Then this morning’s weather newsfeed showed a tropical depression that could well become a hurricane. These two things made me think of Jesus’ words in Matthew 16. Are we, as believers, following the signs of the times?

Jesus asked the question: “When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:7-8). Surveys and research claim many people are leaving the Christian faith. Jesus foretold it. He gave a gracious warning to the Seven Churches in Revelation—reminding them and us—to remember our first love, Jesus Who leads us to the Father.

There will be troubles in the world—Jesus said something to the effect that no servant is greater than his Master, if they persecuted Him they will persecute you (John 15:20). This has been experienced by believers through all times and ages. It is no surprise. It is something more Christians in North America are experiencing after years and years of freedom.

Dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus Christ—stir up your faith. See the signs and return to church, the fellowship of believers who together are blessed and blessing one another. Listen to the Word of God so that you may grow strong in Christian hope, faith and love—no matter the climate of the world around you. And do not fear—Christ our King has been given all authority and power—these challenging times are not a surprise—but a sign that the end is nearing. Bless Him. And speak boldly of His return, which is drawing nearer and nearer every day. There are many who must even now, by the decree of our Father in heaven, be snatched from the gates of hell. Tell your friends and co-workers about Jesus. Do so knowing Jesus’ Spirit lives in you and He will keep you in our precious faith until Christ returns.

Father in heaven, thank You for the gift of Jesus Christ—the Savior of the World and the Prophet extraordinaire—Who leads to victory those who formerly were captive to the kingdom of darkness. Mighty God, send Your Spirit to Your Church and people so that Your people will proclaim Jesus Christ and His ever-approaching return doing so with urgent zeal.

September 15, 2022 -- Proverbs 10:6 -- What is on your head?

Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
   but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Proverbs 10:6 ESV

Over the last ten days or so I did a lot of traveling. Whenever your travel you meet all kinds of people—and many wearing all sorts of headgear. There are turbans and caps; yarmulke and hoodies. Whatever is on your head is obvious to all who look at you. According to Hebrews Jesus is crowned with glory and honour (2:9). Because the crown of glory and honour rest on His head, all His followers are those whose lives bring blessings to others. It is as obvious as the crown on Christ’s head. The true followers of Christ live to honour their Savior and Lord and such obedient service to Him results in the blessing of others.

Sometimes it is hard to read the lips of even your best friend. What may seem like a scowl is actually laughter being held back. Equally, the smiling face of a wrong-doer can suddenly spit out curses and hateful words.

Here is the lesson from this proverb—as you have received blessings and salvation from God the Father through Jesus Christ—then bless others. Let your words be seasoned with kindness and your lips pour forth encouragement. Such living is the crown of Christ already becoming visible upon your head.

Father in heaven, You have crowned Your Son with glory and honour and blessing. Praised be Your Name for the gift of Jesus and His reconciling work. Triune God, as Your favour rests on us, help us, Your people, to radiate blessing to all we meet. Let the knowledge of Jesus Christ and devotion to Him fill this earth, as the waters cover the seas. Amen.
