June 12, 2022 -- Colossians 3:23-24 -- Giving all for Jesus

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23-24 ESV

It is hard to believe that we are back home again. After months and months of planning and preparation our vacation is suddenly done. We have traveled over 3,600 KM; visited friends and family members (missing many of them because the time was short). Suddenly here we are, home again.

The passage in Colossians reminds us that we are to work with all our concentration, joy and hope fixed on Jesus. We deny ourselves, tearing ourselves away from our selfish works and impulses, and focus on Him because He is our reward and our inheritance. The time for His return is counting down so quickly. Our life will seem like a long-planned vacation, so wonderful and so surprisingly short. Anything and everything we have done for the glory of our King will be all that lasts.

What seems like a great sacrifice now will, in the light of eternity, be so light and momentary (that is the point Paul made in I Corinthians 4:17 when he wrote of our light and momentary affliction). Enjoy Him right now, savour the nearness of your Lord. Trust Him. His blessing sustains you now as you serve Him. His blessing will uphold you for all eternity.

Blessed Lord thank You for Your goodness which is evident in every part of our lives right now. Thank You for the weight of glory which is still in store. Direct us by Your Spirit so that we will truly live for Jesus, gladly setting aside the works of darkness and old patterns of sin so that our lives are lived in dedicated thanksgiving for all Jesus has done, is doing and will do to bring us into the presence of our Father in heaven. Amen.

June 5, 2022 -- Hebrews 2:1-3 -- Serving the One, True God Who Reveals Himself in the Bible

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. 2 For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?
Hebrews 2:1-3 ESV

Did you know Hebrews has six warnings against turning away from God? Why mention this? First of all, it is important to know the Word of God thoroughly, so that one does not serve the god of his own making. Second, because the Christian knows the details of the books of the Bible, he can listen to a preacher and know if he is cherry-picking passages merely to make his audience feel good, or the preacher preaches all the Word of God. The whole Bible is God’s revelation, there are many warning passages so that one does not miss the glory of God for the sake of a man-made gospel. Many preachers will avoid these hard passages because he wants his people to like him and feel good about themselves. That is damnable, because many people are rushing towards hell, thinking that the god they have made up in their own heads and the god preached by these false teachers will save them and make them feel good about themselves. The devil delights in this. The Living God gives to His people the difficult news of their deep-seated wickedness so that His people will repent of their sinfulness and turn away from false gods and embrace the Good News given in Jesus Christ Third, the Christian who desires to serve God must pursue Him Who reveals Himself. Like a mathematician delights to resolves challenging equations so a Christians loves to read the Bible, hear it preached so that the depths of the riches contained therein may be revealed to him.

Dear fellow believers, study the word of God. Delight in it. Ask the Spirit of God to show you the riches contained therein. Take the warnings of the Bible seriously so that you change the course of your life and by true repentance and believing you will serve the Living God Who revealed Himself so perfectly in Jesus Christ and by the Spirit’s work in and through the Word reveals Jesus and the Father. Get yourself to a Bible-believing and Bible-preaching church so that you will grow in our precious faith. If the fact that Hebrews has six warnings against drifting away has intrigued you, why not study through Hebrews and seek these out and so be warned, encouraged, and fed in your faith? (You are welcome to email me if you are stuck). Shalom.

Mighty God, LORD of Eternity, our Father in Jesus Christ, blessed are You! Thank You for Your Self-revelation so gloriously given in Jesus Christ. Thank You for Your Self-revelation given so richly by the Spirit Whom You and Jesus have poured out into our lives. King of Majesty empower Your preachers and evangelists, your missionaries and Bible-teachers this day so that the Word will go out with power and accomplish the purpose for which You sent it. Build up You people so that Christians near and far will by Your Spirit be awakened in our precious faith and live as Light in this sin-darkened world and doing so unto the glory of Christ and the honour of Your Great Name. Amen.

June 4, 2021 -- Psalm 17:13-15 -- Your best life--when?

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him!
   Deliver my soul from the wicked by Your sword,
from men of the world whose portion is in this life.
You fill their womb with treasure;
   they are satisfied with children,
   and they leave their abundance to their infants.
As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness;
   when I awake I shall be satisfied with your likeness.
Psalm 17:13-15 ESV

Within my family there is a history of aunts and uncles not speaking to one another. It began with the division of their parents’ inheritance. The in-fighting led to decades of anger and simmering bitterness. Psalm 17 touches on this—the people of this world find their portion in this life. That term "portion" is critical, an-information packed reference to the rest of the Old Testament. You see, the LORD is the portion of His people (Psalm 16:5, Numbers 18:24). Think of Job in the Old Testament—he lost his wealth, his children, all his earthly treasures, even his friends spoke untruths to him in a failed attempt to comfort him. Why did Job still turn to God, pray to Him and worship Him? Because God alone was His portion, when even life itself would be taken from him, Job would find all his comfort in the Living God.

Look at our reading today. Wicked men and women want all the blessings to be in their life NOW. To coin a phrase, they want their best life now. The Bible shows us our best life is guarded for us in eternity. Now we pour out our lives in offering to the Father in heaven, all this in view of His great gift of Jesus Christ. In Christ we have all our portion, our fullness. In Jesus Christ we have spiritual children—of far greater value than biological children because spiritual children share the joy of the LORD with us. Notice how cutting the psalm-writer is. These people who want all the world’s treasures now, they want things more than they want God, the Creator of all things and the Glory of them who desire Him alone—these people will acquire wealth and they’ll leave their treasures and abundance to children or infants. Children or infants are those who will be foolish in how they handle and lose such treasures.

The psalmist finds his great pleasure in looking fully on the face of Jesus. That is how it should be for the Christian. Morning and evening, it is your God alone Who can fill the aching void of your life. When it seems all things are stacked against you, and all things you thought were dear to you now seem a trinkets and baubles, look to Jesus. He is worth every sacrifice, every devotion, everything.

The prayer today has this calamity as its background--Job's 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels and 500 yoke of oxen and 500 female donkeys all were torn from him in one day. Seconds after the announcement of these losses, Job was informed his seven sons and three daughters all died at once, together, when the house they were in collapsed. This prayer is Job's response:
Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head (signs of mourning) and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said,
"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return.
The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away;
Blessed be the Name of the LORD."
Job 1:20-21

May 29, 2022 -- Psalm 10:16-18 -- Hope revived

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

The LORD is King forever and ever;
   the nations perish from His land.
O LORD, You hear the desire of the afflicted;
   You will strengthen their heart; You will incline Your ear
to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed
so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
Psalm 10:16-18 ESV

What is the point of voting? (For those who don't know it, there is an election in Ontario.) Furthermore, one of the federal political parties is holding a leadership contest. Voting or not voting, one party or another, nothing seems to improve. This is the lament I’ve heard over the last couple of days as Carolyn and I visit with family and friends during our vacation. The sure hope we have as Christians is this: Jesus Christ is the King forever.

The Old Testament pointed to His rule; the Father in heaven brought all of history to the exact moment when the time was ripe for Jesus’ arrival. The work of Jesus is to reveal the Father—the LORD of the Old Testament—is God and His plans and purposes are being fulfilled. All that is unfair now; all that seems to escape from justice will in fact be brought to perfect justice when Jesus returns.

Jesus hears the desires of the afflicted. He Himself is their peace. He is their hope in this life and their confidence in the life to come. The Spirit of God makes the Word so rich and so real that believers can endure all things in the strength the Spirit brings. The Spirit of God inclines the heart to know that justice is near and those who terrorize the earth will one day face judgment and terrors in hell that will never end.

Believer, praise God that He is the lasting King.

Follower of Jesus Christ, pray for the leaders of nations and political parties that even now they will repent and honour Christ that it might go well with people in various lands now and that these leaders will not experience the endless terrors of hell!

Sufferers, strengthened by the Spirit, know the Word of God, which revives your hope and give you that ability to not only survive difficult times, but to thrive in the awareness of the nearness of our God, Who is bringing history to its right conclusion in Jesus Christ.

Faithful King of Heaven, thank You for the assurance of Your Word. Thank You that You hear the desire of the afflicted and that You strengthen their heart. Mighty King, as Your people gather for worship this day, revive our hopes. In worship may the truth of this Psalm be brought home to us so that we will are emboldened by Your Spirit to live for Jesus Christ--living as beacons of light in a sin-darkened world. Amen.

May 24, 2022 -- Matthew 7:18-20 -- Fruitful for Jesus

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
Matthew 7:19-20 ESV

When you walk through an orchard, the beautifully coloured and shaped fruit hanging on the tree is so attractive. Think of how attractive an orchard of peach trees is, there in late July, as the fragrance of the fruit pleases the nostrils and the yellow-orange hues of the skin are so please the eye.

This is likely one reason our Lord spoke of good fruit in His description of Christians. Christ-followers, who are dedicated to serving God in all their life, are very appealing, compelling to non-Christians. Someone who sees the fruitful life of the Christian is intrigued and admires what God has produced in the life of the believer; such a life is pleasing.

There is a story about D.L. Moody, the famous American evangelist of the later 1800’s, of his response to someone who disapproved of his style of evangelism. Moody was very direct.

A man approached Moody and said "I don't like you method of evangelism."
Moody countered and said, “What’s yours?”
The man replied, “I don’t have one.”
Moody replied, “Then I like mine better.”

As you read the Word, pray, and live for God, what is the evidence of your good fruit? Is your life flavorful in in obedience to God in such a way that others are drawn to God? Are you prepared to speak your faith so many will believe?

Father of Jesus,
the God of my salvation and the delight of my soul,
You Who rejoice over me in love.
I commend my heart to Your watchful care,
for I know its treachery and power;
Guard its every portal from the wily enemy,
Give me quick discernment of his deadly arts,
Help me to recognize his bold disguise as an angel of life,
and bid him be gone.
May my words and works allure others to the
   highest walk of faith and love!
May loiterers be quickened to greater diligence
   by my example!
May worldlings be won to delight in acquaintance with Thee!
Help me to walk as Jesus walked,
   my only Saviour and perfect Model,
   His mind my inward guest,
   His meekness my covering garb.
Amen.

May 22, 2022 -- Isaiah 57:15 -- What I think about God impacts...

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,
who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
“I dwell in the high and holy place,
and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly,
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Isaiah 57:15 ESV

What I think of God
   impacts what I think of myself which
   impacts what I think of sin
   and that impacts what I think of salvation.
Richard Owen Roberts

What a marvelous sequence of thought. The starting place is what one thinks of God. Roberts was arguing that sin, any sin, for example abortion, is a fruit of a society that does not think of God. You can cut away as much fruit as you want. All you are doing is getting at the symptoms of sin, but the root cause of the sin remains unaddressed. Public protests and letter writing campaigns, petitioning government and so on, these are not ultimately effective. What gets at the root of sin—societal, ecclesiological, and communal and private sin? Nothing but an awareness of Who God truly Is. In Scripture He gives His Self-portrait. That is why it is critical to read the Bible—study it, search it out to seek for God, the True and Living God as He reveals Himself. When one's thoughts on God are anchored in Who He reveals Himself to be, all else changes.

I urge you this Sunday, get to a church that preaches from the Word of God. Get to a church which preaches the majesty of God and bows before Him. For the One Who is High and Lifted-up lives in only two places: the glory of eternity and the heart of the contrite.

How lovely is your dwelling place,
    O Lord of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, faints
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
    to the living God.
Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
Psalm 84:1-2; 5 ESV

May 21, 2022 -- Mark 6:30-34 -- Making Disciples Equipping Evangelists

People loved by the Father, in the power of the Spirit: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. 33 Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.
Mark 6:30-34 ESV

In a few weeks I’ll have the opportunity to have a reading week. This sabbatical week has the focus of reading four books and doing some prayerful brain-storming on a theme, something like: making disciples and equipping evangelists. Since it is harder than ever to have access into the prisons—Covid regulations making it, (even now!) near impossible to enter—how can my fellow prison-visiting-pastors and I correspond with prisoners, or use the limited times we have to chat on the phone—so that we can make disciples who make disciples?

The passage today is powerful for me. Jesus had just learned His cousin John the Baptist had been beheaded by King Herod. He was given no time to grieve. Instead the seventy-two disciples He’d sent out to go to towns ahead of Him, preparing the way for His arrival had all returned, excited to tell Jesus what had happened. Jesus had grief, kept private. Jesus was pursued by the crowds, some of whom were earnest, some curious, some mocking and all of whom were pressing in on Him. He had compassion.

The compassion of Jesus truly is striking. He is The Disciple-Maker and Equipper of Evangelists. Those who followed Him were sent ahead of Him with the task of pointing others to Him. I conclude today with the words from a book that is part of my reading list:
     Every broken life has potential for mission.
     There’s a message in every mess. Can you grasp that?
     If so, it will change the way you see people. Everyone you
     meet, regardless of how wretched their life may seem,
     is a missionary in the making.
     Mark O. Wilson

Savior of the Word, by the presence of Your Spirit in my life, renew in me an ever-deepening understanding of Who You Are. Sent by the Father, the Gift to the world; very God and worthy of worship; the Second Person of the Godhead, the Great I AM. Father in heaven, help me to honour, bless and glorify Your Name as I tell others of Your great love, given flesh, Jesus, so that He would make open the way for true fellowship: God with us! Open my eyes and create in me a passionate understanding of the task You have given--to declare Jesus' great Name to all I meet. Father in heaven, throw open the prisons so that visits can be made again and Your great Name declared. Faithful Father, stir my heart and make my zeal for Your Great Name bold, so that Jesus Name will be on my lips and honoured in every part of my life. Amen.

May 20, 2022 -- Luke 18:8 -- Faith on the earth? Do not despair!

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

…”when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?”
Luke 18:8 ESV

Wikipedia has an entry about successive Canadian census data and Christianity. In 1991 34.9% of Canadians identified themselves as Protestant Christians, that is about 9.4 million people. Ten years later, 29.2% of Canadians identified themselves as Protestant Christians, that is about 8.6 million people. Though the total population of Canada grew by 5.9 million, there was a sharp decline in those who call themselves Christian. (Had the percentage of Christians remained steady at 34.9% over that decade, then there’d have been 11.4 million Christians!) So the average Christian family is not even retaining their children in our precious faith, let alone reaching neighbours.

The words of our text this morning are embedded in a larger narrative. Jesus is teaching His disciples to pray, and pray persistently. That is an important take-away in all of this: for a man to stand against the tides of debauchery and sin in our world, especially as we enter the last days, he must be a man of prayer. Holding tightly to His Father in heaven, on the basis of Jesus’ blood and the Spirit’s power at work in him.

Knowing the statistics should not discourage us. Long ago already Jesus foretold of the coming crisis. He told believers so the last days would not be ones of hopelessness and helplessness. Those who are true believers shine like lights in a wicked and sin-darkened age. People will turn to Christians, those who stand up for Jesus while the world groping around in rebellions against the Living God. Such people who are hungry for Good News will find it in those who truly believe. They will be drawn to the Light of Christ which radiates from the heart, and life, of believers.

Be prepared to speak what you know to be true. More than ever believers are evangelists. We are scattered to the four corners of the world with Gospel witness. It is not just the work of your minister or your church leader, it must be you—all who believe in Jesus Christ—who are prepared always to present the truth of Jesus Christ Trust that the Spirit of God will lead people to you, people who need to know what you know. People starved for salvation, who can relate to you and won’t be intimidated by what you know, but will relate to you and accept Who Jesus Is as you explain what the LORD has done for you.

Father in Heaven, blessed and honoured be Your Name. You have given us Jesus, the King, the faithful and true Witness to Your covenant love. Father, forgive us for our wavering faith and uneven testimony to Your glory. Thank You for the reviving Spirit You have given us. Thank You for those whom You placed in our lives who were bold enough to declare the beauty of Jesus and the power of His saving work. As evidences of the decline or even the end of Christianity in the world are shouted at believers, remind us of the vital, spectacular picture of heaven, where every rule and kingdom opposed to You is already defeated. Renew in us the splendid vision of angels surrounding the throne hymning Your glory and the saints and elders of previous ages, throwing down before You their crowns and every achievement and in awe-filled worship, speaking and singing the surety of Your victory.

May 18, 2022 -- Psalm 144:1-2 -- God the Blessed, Our Shield

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Blessed be the LORD, my rock,
who trains my hands for war,
and my fingers for battle;
2 he is my steadfast love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield and he in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples under me.
Psalm 144:1-2 ESV

A few days ago I was watching a young mom who was in conversation with her friend. Her little one was moving like a tiny calf loosed from its stall ready to jump and move and explore. In fact the little one had just been freed from the playpen.. While they were intensely talking the mom casually redirected her unsteadily-walking 18-month-old so she didn’t bang her head against the coffee table. The mom didn’t break her conversational stride at all when the toddler reached for the hot coffee mug, mom just picked it up and put it up out of reach. Think of how often the LORD, the Blessed, shields us, His children. We likely have no idea how many things He has put out of reach, how many times we might have hurt ourselves and He kept our feet from stumbling.

When we, as believers, do experience battles and hardships, it is His Good Spirit Who leads us (Psalm 143:10). So, we need not be afraid. We do not have to be afraid because He trains our hands for war and our fingers for battle. In Christ we have all we need for life and godliness. Dear family in Christ, be bold in your witness to the work of our God. He is Your shield. His Good Spirit leads you. Christ will receive the reward for which He has come, an inheritance of nations, people drawn to Him. What joy is ours to be able to point others to Jesus Christ—the Captain of our Salvation.

GLORIOUS JEHOVAH, MY COVENANT GOD,
A ll thy promises in Christ Jesus are yea and amen,
and all shall be fulfilled.
Thou hast spoken them, and they shall be done,
commanded, and they shall come to pass.
Yet I have often doubted thee,
have lived at times as if there were no God.
Lord, forgive me that death in life,
when I have found something apart from thee,
when I have been content with ephemeral things.
But through thy grace I have repented;
Thou hast given me to read my pardon
in the wounds of Jesus,
and my soul doth trust in him, my God incarnate,
the ground of my life, the spring of my hope.
Teach me to be resigned to thy will,
to delight in thy law, to have no will but thine,
to believe that everything thou doest is for my good.
Help me to leave my concerns in thy hands,
for thou hast power over evil,
and bringest from it an infinite progression of good,
until thy purposes are fulfilled.
Bless me with Abraham’s faith that staggers not at promises through unbelief.
May I not instruct thee in my troubles,
but glorify thee in my trials;
Grant me a distinct advance in the divine life;
May I reach a higher platform,
leave the mists of doubt and fear in the valley,
and climb to hill-tops of eternal security in Christ
by simply believing he cannot lie,
or turn from his purpose.
Give me the confidence I ought to have in him
who is worthy to be praised,
and who is blessed for evermore.

May 17, 2022 -- I Thessalonians 5:16-19 -- Pray without ceasing

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit.
I Thessalonians 5:16-19 ESV

How does one “pray without ceasing”? Seems impossible doesn’t it? The commands around it give you some help on this. Think of them, all the reasons you have to rejoice: salvation, the knowledge of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit; opportunities to share your faith; times you see how your faith impacts others and they become those rejoicing always. The fact you have a Father in heaven Who has chosen to love you in Christ and guards you for His purposes by His Holy Spirit, planted deep in you.

Prayer without ceasing flows from such rejoicing. Look for people to pray for. Here is an example: “The Joshua Project” (you can find it on-line). Each day there is a people group listed and there is information on their language, their circumstances, how resistant these folks are to the Gospel and ways to pray for them. Pray a Psalm. Every day, read a Psalm and make this part of your prayers. Find the names of your city’s mayor and town councilors and pray for them by name. List the names of ten people in your life who are not (yet) Christians and pray regularly, daily, for their salvation. As they become Christians, ask God if you are to help them grow in their faith. Pray for such wisdom to mentor them in knowing God.

Do not quench the Spirit. The Spirit of God will take the word, the circumstances of your life, and the people in your life and bring them to mind. As the Spirit leads you, pray for such people. Pray through the things in their life. Pray that such trials or health concerns will deepen their faith, break bondage to sin and cause them to grow in faithfulness. Maybe the Spirit, during a newscast, will lead you to pray for the nations suffering from famine and drought in the Horn of Africa? Maybe the Spirit of the LORD will lead you to pray for those in Manitoba who in this year's flood are spear-heading the rescue and relief efforts.

The Christian life is hard work for all of us. We are constantly to die to ourselves, our self-interest, our passions which would pull us away from obedience to Jesus in all things and all times. We must confess our sins. As we know we are forgiven, then change our circumstances, remove opportunities for sin away from ourselves. or move ourselves away from sin-inducing environments. Through-out the day, as you think of others, pray. At the start of the day, dedicate yourself to the Living God, and entrust all the things that happen the in the to His care. At the end of the day, give thanks to the Living God, for His mercies, His answered prayers, and the gift of sleep.

King Jesus, Your disciples asked You: "teach us to pray". So many centuries later, so many countless writings and books on the subject available to us, and we must confess we are still floundering in our prayer-life. Confronted with Your splendor and majesty, Your power and Your willing ability to intervene in the ordinary circumstances of our lives, we confess we are often prayerless. Forgive us. Renew in us a holy fascination for prayer; more even than this, from that place give us a zeal to run to You with all our requests and praises, all our hopes and confessions. As you, Jesus, with the Father in heaven, sent Your Spirit to Your people so that believers may grow in holiness, obedience and prayerfulness--so lead us to trust the Spirit's work and leading in every area of our lives, particularly His Work in leading us more fully into communion with You, Triune God. Amen.

May 14, 2022 -- Exodus 16:4 -- Hearing one petition of the Lord's Prayer, as if for the first time

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
Exodus 16:4 ESV

The LORD’s Prayer has that simple line: “Give us this day our daily bread”. Do you recognize the echo from the Exodus, our passage today? Here is the background. The God of Power led His people out of Egypt. They hurried out of Egypt, thrust out of the land by the unwilling Pharaoh who’d been brought to his knees, bowed before the Sovereignty of the True King of the Land, the LORD of Glory. Even the people of the land threw the Israelites out. So there was no time to prepare provisions. They were in need. Our God was training His people to rely on Him then. No doubt Jesus drew on this memory of their history to teach them how to pray.

Think of the context of our reading today. While the hundreds of thousands of Israelites marched through a dry and weary land where there was virtually no water or food, they had to rely on the LORD for their every need. There is a no doubt a sense that it is appropriate for the Israelites to look to God for daily bread. But do we, today, need it? Do we need to pray with such urgency?

Think how easy it is for a government to invoke an emergency and then seize bank accounts of some of her citizens. It has happened in Canada in the last few months. Consider what you have in your bank account or in your cupboard. Now, think of how Russia, in one day, moved into the two provinces of the Ukraine and suddenly the citizens there had to flee, leaving everything that seemed secure and evidence of plenty, leaving everything behind, just relieved to be alive. Now there are six million displaced Ukrainians. We do not know what the next moment will bring: an earthquake, a flood, fires. So we pray, give us this day, our daily bread. We are committing to our King every moment of our lives and all our circumstances, unaware of what He has in store for us, but trusting He will guard us in His great care and covenant love until we see him face to face.

Today’s prayer is the Lord’s prayer. The version I have chosen is sung by Susan Boyle. Pray along.

May 13, 2022 -- Psalm 144:1-2 -- Christians as agent provocateurs

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who trains my hands for war,
and my fingers for battle;
2 he is my steadfast love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield and he in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples under me.
Psalm 144:1-2 ESV

Look at verse 2, the writer refers to the Living God as “my steadfast love”. The expression is not that of a man loving his wife, or a smitten man singing of his new love interest. In the Scriptures such steadfast love is one of the terms used to describe the covenant commitment of the Living God Who, despite man’s fickleness, waywardness and promiscuity, will direct His healing grace and salvific love to those whom He has appointed for life with Himself.

Now look at the context—our lives are filled with warfare. There is a constant battle for holiness and wholeness in the world around us. Consider this, the Canadian government’s January 2022 report noted there is no place in the Canadian military for Christian chaplains! In the name of inclusivity the Canadian government is issuing harshly exclusive laws. Being a Christian in Canada is to be counter-cultural and an oddity. Christians do not consider man the measure of all things; our lives are lived in submission to Jesus Christ. We are accountable to Him.

So it is the LORD our God Who trains us for this battle; He gifts us with the greatest gift of all: Himself. In this life we are not allied with the society or culture or the nation around us; we are infiltrators, we are agent provocateurs for the King of Glory. This world and all its people are His; for now we see much rebellion against His true reign, but like the Psalmist, we can see the glory of the True King, Who is subduing nations and kingdoms, prime ministers and princes so that one day His Kingdom will be fully revealed and fully realized and the all His enemies will be swept away.

MY DEAR LORD,
I can but tell thee that thou knowest
I long for nothing but thyself,
nothing but holiness,
nothing but union with thy will.
Thou hast given me these desires,
and thou alone canst give me the thing desired.
My soul longs for communion with thee,
for mortification of indwelling corruption,
especially spiritual pride.
How precious it is
to have a tender sense and clear apprehension
of the mystery of godliness,
of true holiness!
What a blessedness to be like thee
as much as it is possible for a creature to be like its Creator!
Lord, give me more of thy likeness;
Enlarge my soul to contain fullness of holiness;
Engage me to live more for thee.
Help me to be less pleased with my spiritual experiences,
and when I feel at ease after sweet communings,
teach me it is far too little I know and do.
Blessed Lord,
let me climb up near to thee,
and love, and long, and plead, and wrestle with thee,
and pant for deliverance from the body of sin,
for my heart is wandering and lifeless,
and my soul mourns to think it should ever lose sight of its Beloved.
Wrap my life in divine love,
and keep me ever desiring thee,
always humble and resigned to thy will,
more fixed on thyself,
that I may be more fitted for doing
and suffering.

May 11, 2022 -- Mark 14:29 -- Rash vows and the Savior's Prayers

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”
Mark 14:29 ESV

It is easy to imagine that Peter fell away from Jesus at the moment in the courtyard where he denied knowing Jesus. As I re-read Mark 14 today, part of my morning devotions, I wondered, didn’t Peter actually begin his fall when he could not stay awake with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane? Jesus warned him and asked him “Simon [Peter], are you asleep?” Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (verses 37-38). Even after that warning, Peter fell asleep a second time.

I have often said I can identify with Peter. Quick to speak, but much slower to engage the brain before speaking. I am like Peter, prepared to make bold statements in dedication to the Lord of Glory, but as quickly falling asleep when the hour of need is nigh.

Thanks be to God we have a Savior Who intercedes for us. Thanks be to God for Jesus Christ Who never failed in prayer, in courage, in faithfulness. Thanks be to God, this same Spirit given to Jesus is given to all who believe.

Mighty King, seated at the Father’s right hand, thank You for Your prayers. Thank You that you know my weakness and know my failures—all of them—past, present and future. Thank You, Father in heaven and dear Savior beside Him, for the gift of Jesus Christ, given while I was yet a sinner. Blessed Spirit, thank You for Your presence in my life. Thank You that by the bequest of God You are given so that I have all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of Him Who called me to His own Glory. By Your work in me, Spirit of God, bring me to maturity in faith. Amen.

May 10, 2022 -- Psalm 141:1-4 -- An Appropriate Morning Prayer

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

O LORD, I call upon you; hasten to me!
    Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
    and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth;
    keep watch over the door of my lips!
Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
    to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who work iniquity,
    and let me not eat of their delicacies!
Psalm 141:1-4 ESV

This is an appropriate Psalm for the start of the day! The writer is seeking the protection of the LORD right from the outset of the day and imploring Him for His help to continue till the time when evening sacrifices are made. That makes sense, I too, need the help of the LORD all day and all night!

There is a verb which made me recall an earlier Bible scene. It is the verb guard. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, the LORD cast them out of that beautiful place. He placed a mighty angel at the entrance to the Garden, with a flaming sword that turned every way so that no one could pass by it and take from the Tree of Life—and live in sin for all ages. It is that picture which comes to mind as I read verse 3—that the LORD Himself in the same way, guard my mouth, even with a flaming sword so that no words would pass my lips that are ungracious, defaming of His glory, or discrediting to my Christian walk.

Thanks be to God, by His Spirit’s presence, my heart is becoming purified and my thoughts are being cleansed, but I know so much wickedness can still well up from within me. The Living Water given in Jesus Christ is constantly flowing into my mind, heart and life, displacing the cesspools of evil which are even now are becoming diluted from evil and cleansed.

I appreciate the urgency of the psalm-writer, who is asking for the power of God to resist the company of friends or co-workers, or family members—those who might have a claim on our lives—and use this claim to draw us into immoral or gross behavior. Even food can become a snare because it is at the table of friends we can let down our guard and engage in sinful words, or joking which lead to greater sins.

Thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! The Father and the Son give to believers the Holy Spirit, the very Person of Power Who strengthened Jesus in His humanity. As the Spirit guarded Jesus, so that same Spirit is given to you and to me, so that we have all things that pertain to life and godliness and knowledge. Now that is a great start to the day.

O LORD, I call upon you; hasten to me!
    Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
    and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!

3 Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth;
    keep watch over the door of my lips!
4 Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
    to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who work iniquity,
    and let me not eat of their delicacies!
But my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord;
    in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!

May 9, 2022 -- Mark 12:41-44 -- The LORD keeps vigil

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Mark 12:41-44 ESV

There is a good reason to read Scripture over and over again. Each time you’ll hear or notice something new. This morning in my devotion time this brief passage was part of my readings. I have often heard it. The focus, usually, in sermons I’ve heard or in my own reading has been on the widow herself, or the money she gave. Today, something else impacted me.

A little background first. I suppose it is because I was reading and preaching Exodus 12 recently, the exodus of Israel out of Egypt. It was the LORD Who kept vigil over His people (Ex. 12:42). That echoes through-out Scripture. The LORD is your keeper (He watches over you) by day and by night (Psalm 121:5-6). And there are many other places where one reads it is the LORD Who is watching His people. So, with this Scriptural echo reverberating through my mind, I was transfixed this time as I read what used to be fairly ordinary words: “Jesus sat down opposite the people putting money into the offering box” (verse 41). He knew she’d be there. He knew her poverty. He knew her state and need. He kept vigil, He was watching. This is God Incarnate, Jesus demonstrating what is ever-true in the heavenly places:

“The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down;
   the LORD loves the righteous.
The LORD watches over sojourners;
   He upholds the widow and the fatherless,
   but the way of the wicked He brings to ruin.”
Psalm 146:8b-9 ESV

There Jesus is, seated in the temple, doing what His Father in heaven always does, He watches over those in need. Be warned, those who are wicked, the LORD sees. Be comforted and reassured, those who are weighed down by troubles, and cry out to the LORD, the LORD sees and is keeping vigil in love.

Read these verses, slowly, out-loud, as a recitation of praise to the LORD and be assured of His gracious promises to you.

To whom then will you compare me,
    that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
    who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
    calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
    and because he is strong in power,
    not one is missing.

27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
    and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
    and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:25-31

May 7, 2022 -- Mark 7:31-37 -- Jesus Does ALL Things Well

People loved by the Father, in the power of the Spirit: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Mark 7:31-37 ESV

Jesus strictly commanded those He’d healed not to tell others about Him. Notice that it is the whole of Jesus’ ministry that has the crowds talking and telling others; they declare "He has done all things well". From the start of Jesus' ministry the people reported of Jesus “He speaks as one Who has authority” (Mark 1:22). What impressed the people? It was the fact that He communicated the Word of God to the people of God. It was electrifying for them. They could not keep it to themselves.

Dear family in Christ, is that your experience of Jesus? Do you read of Him in the Bible, hear Him preached about on Sunday and does the Spirit so capture your heart that you can’t help but talk about Him? I ask that, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, pretty much aware of the answer already. Why is it that our experience of Jesus, in our personal times with Him each day, our Sunday times with Him, and our family devotion times do not motivate us to go out and tell the world? What has made your time with Him so stale that you are not declaring Him to all?

Pray for the Spirit’s work to reawaken your soul to delight in the Savior. Examine your life to see what sin might be hindering your walk with God. Then confess it, praying for forgiveness and strength to turn from it. Spend time with Christians whose walk you admire so that you will grow in delight of the LORD and boldly proclaim Him. Like the crowds that first encountered him, tell everyone you meet, Jesus has done all things well.

Recite this passage of Zephaniah as a poem of praise to God our Father and as a song of instruction, teaching you Who you are in Christ. Then powered by the Spirit, rejoice and the tell others what all the LORD our God is doing.

Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion;
    shout, O Israel!
Rejoice and exult with all your heart,
    O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away the judgments against you;
    he has cleared away your enemies.
The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst;
    you shall never again fear evil.
16 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Fear not, O Zion;
    let not your hands grow weak.
17 The Lord your God is in your midst,
    a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.
18 I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival,
    so that you will no longer suffer reproach.[c]
19 Behold, at that time I will deal
    with all your oppressors.
And I will save the lame
    and gather the outcast,
and I will change their shame into praise
    and renown in all the earth.
20 At that time I will bring you in,
    at the time when I gather you together;
for I will make you renowned and praised
    among all the peoples of the earth,
when I restore your fortunes
    before your eyes,” says the Lord.

May 6, 2022 -- Mark 6:14-20 -- He kept him safe

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.
Mark 6:14-20 ESV

There is something beautiful about reading longer stretches of Scripture consecutively. First, what stood out in today’s reading is at verse 20, Herod knew John was a righteous and holy man, that is why Herod kept him safe. However, when Herod’s step-daughter danced a lustful dance, Herod made a rash vow, ask me for anything and I’ll give. She, incited by her mother, asked for John’s head on a platter. Herod did not keep this man, whom he respected, safe.

Second, I would have missed the contrasts which the previous chapter and later narratives highlight. Now the contrast. In chapter 5, Jesus went out of his way to save a man possessed by a legion of demons (Mark 5:1-20). Jesus kept him safe. A woman who’d had an issue of blood for 12 years and no doctor could help her. Jesus kept her safe (Mark 5:21ff). Jairus meanwhile was tapping his foot in impatience as his daughter was near to death and while Jesus stopped to help this other woman Jairus feared the worst. His daughter died. But death does not stop Jesus. He raised this little girl from the dead. Jesus kept a family safe from the clutches of evil.

Those whom the Father has appointed for eternal life will be saved. Those who are saved will suffer in this life; but they know the suffering they endured before their salvation, they lived lives devoid of holiness and honour. Now that Christ has lifted them from the hell-bound direction of their lives, such who are kept safe in Jesus are prepared to pour out their lives in sacrificial service to Him. It is the Spirit Who empowers holy living, so men like John, can declare the glory of God, even while in prison. No king kept John safe. Jesus, to Whom John gave his life in righteous service, saved him from the wrath of God and the clutches of hell, and delivered John safe to His Father in heaven.

Fellow believer, read the flow of Bible history. The Father is faithful. The Father keeps His promise of steadfast covenant love so that in Christ all are kept safe. The Father and the Son pour out the Spirit so that those who are saved by grace to the glory of the Father can give their lives in righteous and holy service to the Triune God, in Whom is all protection and safety now and for eternity.

Heavenly Father!
Thou hast led me singing to the cross
where I fling down all my
burdens and see them vanish,
where my mountains of guilt are leveled to a plain,
where my sins disappear, though they are
the greatest that exist,
and are more in number than the grains of fine sand;
For there is power in the blood of Calvary
to destroy sins more than can be counted
even by one from the choir of heaven.
Thou hast given me a hill-side spring that
washes clear and white,
and I go as a sinner to its waters,
bathing without hindrance in its crystal streams.
At the cross there is free forgiveness
for poor and meek ones,
and ample blessings that last forever;
The blood of the Lamb is like a great river of infinite grace
with never any diminishing of its fullness
as thirsty ones without number drink of it.
O Lord, forever will thy free forgiveness live
that was gained on the mount of blood,
In the midst of a world of pain it
is a subject for praise in every place a song on earth,
anthem in heaven,
its love and virtue knowing no end.
I have a longing for the world above
where multitudes sing the great song,
for my soul was never created to love the dust of earth.
Though here my spiritual state is frail and poor,
I shall go on singing Calvary’s anthem.
May I always know that a clean heart
full of goodness is more beautiful than the lily,
that only a clean heart can sing by night
and by day, that such a heart is mine
when I abide at Calvary.

May 4, 2022 -- Mark 2:15-17 -- Confronted by the Great Physician

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Mark 2:15-17 ESV

Jesus was eating at Levi’s house—a man who was a hated agent for the Romans. He betrayed his fellow Jews by collecting Roman taxes for them, and overcharging his own people in order to line his own pockets. The words of the religious leaders (Pharisees and their scribes) are so willfully self-ignorant it is painful. They demand of Jesus' disciples--so sowing in them seeds of doubting the goodness of God, just like the serpent did in the Garden of Eden--"Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

Who are the sinners? If the religious leaders had just read the Old Testament faithfully they would hear what Paul summarized in Romans 3:22-23 “For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.

The tax collectors and others sinners were drawn to Jesus because they were made aware of their sin, which like a cancer was killing them. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day had all the signs of a cancerous-sin condition, but refused to acknowledge it or get the help of the Great Physician, Jesus Christ. It is much worse for the religious leaders because they understood the Old Testament, they know the judgment of God against the wicked, but they still refused the prophets’ warnings and teachers from the Old Testament who exposed the sins of all the people.

Very bluntly, this is why prison ministry is so appealing to me. I meet with men who know they are sinners. They have been convicted by the courts, and by their own conscience. They know the sins of the men around them. When you speak Good News to them, they are thirsty. Amazed at the Living Water Jesus brings. This is why church ministry is often so difficult for me. Like the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, many in the pews believe themselves far superior to “those sinners out there” and therefore, they are in a cancerous-sin-state, unaware of their great need for healing—the very healing Jesus brings to all who know their need of Him.

There is no sin so great that the cross has not disarmed it. The punishment against sin was taken by the Great Physician Jesus Christ. To know who know they are debtors to Jesus, being made aware of one’s own sinfulness is not anger-provoking, it draws from the lips of believers a volley of thanksgiving and praise. Who is like our God—rich in mercy and having unfathomable depths of steadfast love for ruined sinners. Blessed be His Name.

Now, now is the day of repentance. Now is the day to acknowledge how great are your sins. If you're already a pew-sitter, or a tax-collector sinner, know and believer how much greater, infinitely greater, is the Great Physician Who heals you and brings you to the Father. You are those who were gross sinners, but now you can be presented as those made clean by His shed blood. How great is Jesus our Healer, Who plants within us the Holy Spirit so that the cancer of sin will never again reclaim us. The Spirit is the guarantee of this great salvation given to us by the gracious Father through the redeeming work of Jesus!

Lord Jesus, Great High Priest,
You have opened a new and living way
by which a fallen creature can approach you with acceptance.
Help me to contemplate the dignity of your Person,
the perfectness of your sacrifice,
the effectiveness of your intercession.
O what blessedness accompanies devotion,
when under all the trials that weary me,
the cares that corrode me,
the fears that disturb me,
the infirmities that oppress me,
I can come to you in my need
and feel peace beyond understanding!
The grace that restores is necessary to preserve,
lead, guard, supply, help me.
And here your saints encourage my hope;
they were once poor and are now rich,
bound and are now free,
tried and now are victorious.
Every new duty calls for more grace
than I now possess,
but not more than is found in you,
the divine Treasury in whom all fullness dwells.
To you I repair for grace upon grace,
until every void made by sin be replenished
and I am filled with all your fullness.
May my desires be enlarged and my hopes be emboldened,
that I may honor you by my entire dependency
and the greatness of my expectation.
Be with me, and prepare me for all
the smiles of prosperity, the frowns of adversity,
the losses of substance, the death of friends,
the days of darkness, the changes of life,
and the last great change of all.
May I find your grace
sufficient for all my needs.

May 3, 2022 -- Philippians 2:12-16 -- Throwing down respectable sins

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
Philippians 2:12-16 ESV

Not that long ago I heard a marvelous, piercing-the-conscience teaching on “respectable sins”. The day was long and there were a few podcasts I listened to and I cannot recall exactly who the speaker was. All I know is the topic struck a chord with me. Of course we all affirm “big sins” like murder or stealing are unacceptable. We know the 10 Commandments quite well and realize the things we are not supposed to do. But there are insidious, brain-worm sins that wheedle their way into the fabric of the day and are not as well-known, nor immediately cut out of our lives.

How many of us are grumblers? Under the breath we protest against what it is we know we should be doing but are finding reasons or justifications not to do so. Or the grumbling is murmuring of discontent as we are internally arguing against the boss who gave us a proper directive but our pride was wounded. Grumbling against a leader is in fact, complaining against the Living God Who has saved you and Who is by His Spirit giving you the will and the ability to work. Grumbling is a direct refusal of the Spirit’s directive work in your life.

Disputing is a tough one as well, a respectable sin that is boring holes in the fabric of your life so that your witness is discredited. How often a Christian will dispute before the full command is given. Isn’t it true that disputing happens almost on automatic pilot, because a heart is puffed up with its own self-importance and is not humble enough to yield to the Living God?

Rather than grumbling, the believer is called to pray to the Living God, asking for the vulnerability to see his error and know his weakness and despite such to have the courage and strength to fight against his flesh and inertia. Rather than grumble the believer who has “prayed himself up” addresses perceived wrongs and is prepared to admit his own wayward thinking should that be pointed out to him.

Instead of disputing, the brother or sister in Christ is confident of his standing before God and is therefore able to hold his tongue until he sees the purpose of a directive. Sometimes an order will seem arbitrary to the one receiving it until a broader plan unfolds and in the working out of the thing reveals its reasonableness. In an age of social media where all the platforms encourage disputing and senseless argumentation, it is hard for Christians to regain a sense of proportion and restrain himself from automatic disputing.

What is the antidote to grumbling and disputing? It is a heart filled with thankfulness, awed by the gracious work of God that continues to bless the Christian. When one is holding fast to the Word of God, the fickleness of man is constantly being exposed, but one who is dedicated to the Living God finds life that is full and joyous. Even hardships are transformed—as Mary Poppins sang, a ‘spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down’. The sugar is the delightfulness of the nearness of God, the medicine is the work we are called to do, striving against the contrariness and rebellion of the world, devil and even our own flesh. The Psalmist proclaimed, “You make know the path of life; in Your Presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Ps. 16:11 ESV).

O LORD, the Salvation of ruined sinners, rescuing them in Jesus Christ--You are the glory of Your people. You are the highest desire of the soul and the best aspiration of the mind; You are worthy of all blessing and service. Forgive us for the softheaded acquiescence with the world that leads us to places where we murmur and grumble against You. Spirit of the Living God, revive us so that our lives, gripped by the Father Who pours out a steady stream of grace in Jesus, are lived in whole-hearted obedience and enthusiastic humility. Help us, Spirit of God, to fight against our own flesh and inertia. Aid us, Spirit of God to stand against the influence of worldliness. Triune God, our Rescue Story, guard us from the schemes and wiles of the devil and all his demonic agents. Preserve us, O God, for in You we take refuge; You are the LORD, our LORD; apart from You we have no good thing! Amen.

May 2, 2022 -- Exodus 12:38 -- In the Exodus a Mixed Multitude

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

A mixed multitude also went up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds.
Exodus 12:38 ESV

Think of it, when Moses and Aaron led the people of the LORD out of the land of Egypt, 600,000 men left, added to that number is their women and children. Now, add to that number this teaching from Exodus 12:38. Besides the 600,000 Israelite men there was added to them a mixed multitude. This is important. You can see from the very beginning of the Bible that it is the intention of the LORD to have His people be a light to the nations so that many people will join with the people of God.

It was the power of the LORD which wore Pharaoh down in such a way that Pharaoh was not strong enough to be angry with the LORD and kill all the people of the LORD, nor was he so powerless that his leaders deposed him. The power of the LORD was so great that some Egyptians and some foreigners who together formed a multitude, a great number of people, who had lived among the Egyptians, this great company of people left family, wealth and land and joined themselves to the people of the Living God.

Beloved, that should impact us powerfully as well. Our lives as men and women devoted to Jesus Christ should shine out from our lives in such a way that others will join us in following Him. We have, like the Israelites left Egypt, the land of slavery to sin. We have, like the Israelites, been shielded by the blood of the Lamb—they by a lamb a year old, and we by the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. The Egyptians were plundered by the Israelites, the followers of Jesus have all things needed for life. Our Father in heaven supplies our daily bread, all that is needed for spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional health. May the people God has placed in our lives see the Mighty Grace and Goodness of God poured out in Jesus Christ and see the outworking of the Spirit in such a way that they too will join us to follow Jesus.

Mighty God, just and true, great is Your work of salvation in and among us. May the Light of Your glory shine out from us in such a brilliant way that Christ is exalted. Spirit of the Living God, use our words of witness and words of confession in such a way that many will be drawn to Jesus Christ and forsaking all, honour Him. Amen.
