August 15, 2022 -- Psalm 1:1-2 -- What you are planning
/People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2 ESV
What is the hardest day to stay faithful to God? Is it your regular working day, or is it harder to stay faithful to God when you have a day off and no plans? No doubt it is the second one. Notice what the blessed man (blessed woman, blessed child) does—he meditates on the law of God day and night. In Psalm 2 that word “meditate” is plot or devise. This is critical for understanding this Psalm.
If you have nothing to do, won't it be tempting to just channel flip and watch this and that and find yourself unguarded in your choice of what you are viewing? When you are feeling at loose ends, it is easier to get involved in drama and gossip at home or at work. The heart that is left unguarded, allowed free reign to run to its own devices will devise evil fashioning trouble for itself.
The man who walks in the happiness of God is the one who plots each day. Even a day off is one in which he is aware he is under the watchful eye of His loving Creator. Imagine how different a day off is when someone plans to spend time with God. Includes in his “to do list” as the most important part of the day. Listening to the voice of God as He speaks His love, named Jesus, hearing such love communicated through His Word. What happiness fills the day when the day does not seem pointless, but is always pointing to God the Savior.
Mighty God, the day and the night belong to You, the seasons and the eons, all are Yours. Thank You that not one moment of our lives is empty of sacredness. By the powerful presence of Your Spirit, tune our hearts so that we are planning our days in such a way that woven into its every part is the awareness of Your goodness and love. King Jesus, help us to be fully submitted and obedient to Your command, that all who are Yours would deny themselves, take up their cross and follow You. Amen.
