January 2, 2022 -- Exodus 5:1-2 -- Who is the LORD that I should serve Him?

People loved by the Father, in the power of the Spirit: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’” But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”
Exodus 5:1-2 ESV

Perhaps these are familiar words to you? Many people know the story of the Exodus because of movies, past and present, which popularize this narrative. What is easy to miss is the stark reality that is portrayed here. Moses and Aaron, slaves of the LORD, confront Pharaoh, a slave of Satan. As Satan’s slave Pharaoh asks, “Who is the LORD that I should obey his voice?”

All people who live now, who have lived in the past or who will live are slaves in one kingdom or another. Either they are slaves to Jesus Christ (Whose yoke is easy and Whose burden is light Matthew 11:30), or they are slaves to Satan (the Devil is a thief who comes to steal, kill and destroy John 10:10). There is no neutral kingdom, no fence or demilitarized zone where people can make a decision whom they will serve.

God, Who in Your loving-kindness both begins and finishes all good things; grant that as we glory in the beginnings of Your grace, so we may rejoice in its completion; through Jesus Christ our Lord—Amen
