June 27, 2021 -- Psalm 106:48 -- Jesus, Blessed Jesus, Strong and Kind

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
   from everlasting to everlasting!
And let all the people say, “Amen!”
   Praise the LORD!
Psalm 106:48 English Standard Version

The Book of Psalms are divided into 5 sections. Today’s text is the final verse of Psalm 106 and the last verse of the fourth book of the Psalms. It is the highpoint of a Psalm that celebrated the salvation of the LORD, Who rescued His people from slavery in Egypt.

We read this as New Testament Christians and realize how much we are like the people of Israel. Jesus has rescued us from our former slavery to sin. He set us free to serve Him. By the strength of His Spirit we are on our way to the promised land, the place where Jesus will be our light day and night and we shall live with our Father in heaven with no possibility of sinning—and we murmur along the way. We complain about the difficulties on the journey.

But that is not the end of the Psalm. It ends with a ringing summons to praise! We are not rescued because we are worthy. We are rescued because the LORD is great. We are rescued precisely because we are unable to save ourselves. The glory of the LORD shines in us and through us because without Him we would still be enslaved, lost and helpless.

Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
   bless His holy Name!
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
   and forget not His benefits,
Who forgives all your iniquity,
   Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
Who satisfies your soul with good,
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
