June 15, 2021 -- Philippians 2:4-11 -- Honour His Name

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:4-11 ESV

Yesterday, when considering this passage the thought that of all of life and worship is a drill for the sure event of Jesus’ return was in focus. Today, look at verse 9. Read it again. I’ll wait. How precious Jesus’ Name is to the Father in heaven. The Father has raised up Jesus and given Him the one Name that is more precious, more beautiful than any Name.

When you are in a taxi cab, or at work, is Jesus’ Name honoured? Or, at least, when someone uses His precious Name as a curse word, do you comment and tell them how precious He is to You? It is an opportunity for witness—you can, with gentleness, explain why for you and all Christian believers His Name is great.

Is your life consistent with your confession of Jesus Christ? When someone points out to you the disparity of what you say you believe and then shows you your inconsistent actions, do you repent?

Today is the day of salvation. Now is the opportunity to praise God and honour the Name of Jesus—the Name that is above every other name. The great kindness of God our Father is shown in this, He has poured out His Spirit so that we can read the Word, learn, grow in understanding and in joy-filled obedience.

Our Father in heaven,
   hallowed be Your Name.
Your kingdom come, Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
   and forgive us our debts,
as we have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the Kingdom, the power and glory,
   both now and forevermore. Amen.
