December 11, 2021 -- Luke 11:53-54 -- Rescue

As he [Jesus] went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.

Luke 11:53-54 ESV

Jesus came to rescue us from the present evil age. That is from Galatians 1:4. The people of His day and the people living today do not realize the extent of the evil in which they are drowning. Jesus comes as the Savior. He is our Rescue. Rather than reaching out to Him, the very people He came to save folded their arms and challenged him. It is almost like they are now up to their armpits in the quicksand of evil, completely unaware of their peril.

Our generation today needs the warning as much as that generation which lived in Jesus’ day. He asks: “Why do you call me ‘Lord,’ ‘Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46 ESV). That title Lord could be used sarcastically by those who mock Him. The title Lord might be used with a measure of respect, but no obedience.

The Savior of the World has come. Are you looking for excuses not to believe in Him? Why would you ignore the rescue which our Father in heaven provided?

Spirit of the Living God, open up my eyes and my heart, so that I will both call Jesus Lord and obey Him. Spirit strengthen me for holy obedience to Jesus and this to the honour and praise of the Father in heaven. Amen.
