October 25, 2021 -- Revelation 22:16 -- Jesus the Morning Star

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
Revelation 22:16 ESV

There is no reason for it that I can identify. Today is a tough day emotionally. I am carried along by a current that pushing me towards the deeps. This is the struggle of depression. Not wanting to do so, I put my shoes on. Despite internal protesting about my indecisive, wavering decision to walk; despite an emotional lethargy hard to describe, I opened the door and stepped outside. I brought my headphones and while walking outside so I could listen to the devotional readings chosen for today. Surely the Spirit of God is our comfort! The reading quoted above, nearly at the end of my day’s selected readings, shone brightly. Piercing the gloom.

When the night is dark, bleak, cold, Jesus is the bright morning star. He is declaring the Day is near. His presence is perceivable. The bright morning star shines, informing those who look up into their night sky, the darkness is nearly done. The morning star is here. Day is near. Jesus sent His angel who has testified to His goodness. John, the beloved disciple, has received the brilliant testimony of Revelation and declared it to the churches so that believers can hold on, no matter the circumstances, and do so aware of the love of Jesus. So day or night, barely holding on or secure, jailed or free, rich or poor, whatever our circumstances, the Light of Jesus will shine forth.

Jesus, bright and morning star, shine on. Help me. Amen.
